Fifty years of loose definitions in food safety in general may not change anytime soon, and maybe we don’t want them to. Maybe it’s better that producers regulate themselves, if they will. Many food producers commit to using only healthy ingredients, while the major competitors hang on tenaciously to anything that will create a competitive advantage. Of course, we gullible consumers may be led to believe that there’s no real problem in the foods on the store shelves.

So, here’s one victory in the battle for awareness. If the FDA follows through with enforcing a ban on trans fats, we will improve the chances of better health for junk food eaters. Unfortunately, the manufactured and processed veggies, fruits, and snacks of all sorts still have had their life processed right down the drain.
